Just a t-shirt....

scissors, a needle, and some thread! I came up with the idea last November of 2012 when I was taking a study break and found myself on a crafting website. I came across a post about re-using old t-shirts to make a 5-strand headband and decided to try it out for myself. So I grabbed one of my t-shirts that the college dryers had shrunken, my travel size sewing kit, a pair of scissors, and before I knew it, I had created my first headband! It was grey, and it was pretty comfortable on my head.
I know it sounds crazy to say that the idea had hit me out of the blue, but it's the truth! I realized that this simple craft could become so much more. The number of people I know who have had, has, or knows someone with cancer is just crazy! I knew I had to do something about it. Now, I know that I'm probably not going to end cancer once and for all...but if I could, I would! So, I decided to do the next best thing. I Facebook messaged a few close friends of mine and told them my idea, that we could make these headbands ourselves and sell them, then give all of the profit to cancer research! They loved the idea, and have been extremely supportive AND helpful. So we decided that we would make a support page on Facebook, as well as ask for t-shirt donations (to keep the cost low!), and Headbands for Cancer quickly went into action and has grown more than I thought it would.
I often think of a quote from Gandhi, "Be the change you want to see in the world." Whether it's raising money for cancer research, or simply lending someone a hand... if you ever look at a situation and say to yourself, "someone should do something about this,"... well, why can't you be that person ?! That's what I thought when I came up with the idea... why can't I be the one to do this? After being a Girl Scout for 13 years, I knew that my leadership skills would come in handy, so I decided to start a project of my own. Now, I'm not saying that I'm the only one who has ever thought of the idea, in fact, I'm sure I'm not. But I feel great knowing that I contributed to helping fund cancer research :-) Watching the project grow has been one of the best parts. I started out with just a couple of girls, and many others have offered to help as well! My team has  grown, and having a friend or an acquaintance ask about the project excites me, as it's my proof that the word of my project has been getting out there!
My headbands are just $3 each, and come in 5 different sizes and many colors. I'd like to make a note, that if you don't see the headband that you want, you may soon as we still have SO many more t-shirts to use. Every headband sold helps and all of the support that we've had so far, we've been very thankful for it! :-)
